Making old lamps new

I am in the midst of decorating a new apartment. The only problem is I’m in college. Therefore, I basically have very little money to spend on this endeavor. I am always looking for cheap DIYs to take a used piece and make it fresh and new.

I discovered two old lamps in my parent’s house that were being neglected in the basement. They were both made of a shiny gold metal that was covered in splotches of stains. The lamp shades were faded and torn, but the overall shape of their frames were both cute. I decided with a little revamping they would be a nice addition to my living room.

I started by rubbing this miracle paint on the frames. It gets rid of that ugly gold shine and makes them into a nice matted bronze color. You can find this stuff at any hardware store, most craft stores or online at Amazon:

Next I conquered the lamp shades. I had to throw the old ones out because they were so far gone. I  shopped around and found a good deal at IKEA.

I used painters tape to mark a straight line around each shade. To make sure this was perfectly straight I marked it off first using a ruler and pencil. After the tape was on I used acrylic paint to create a black stripe. You can make any pattern of stripes and use any color with this same technique.

Now the lamps look fresh and stylish in my living room!

Black and Blue – Professional Dressing

It can be incredibly hard to dress professionally for an interview when you’re looking for a job in a creative field. You have to show off your sense of style and not look like everyone else in the expected boring pant suit. But you still need to look professional.

The easiest way to make a professional outfit look more stylish is to add in one loud piece of clothing. For me, this blue neoprene skirt does the trick.

I kept the rest of the outfit simple with a black shirt, blazer and heels.

Horsey Profile: Rimfire

Rimfire is our beautiful bay Morgan horse. My brother won him in an essay contest. When we got the call that my brother had won, it was a lucky day because we ended up with this sweetheart.

He has the sweetest eyes of any horse. He even has little lines over his eyes that wrinkle up when he’s concerned. It’s adorable.

He loves to run and show off.

His favorite thing in the world is showing off in a ring with crowds cheering him on. He loves the attention.

Here he is in action.

And here he is with his girlfriend, Annie, following closely behind.

These two are completely inseparable.

Vegas

I had never been to Vegas before and I was expecting something completely different than what I experienced. The strip is so much fun, with great food and endless shopping. But my favorite part of the entire trip was exploring the desert just outside the city. Here are some of the photos I took out in the beautiful Nevada landscape.

Fall Outfit Inspiration

I know it’s a little bit past fall, but I still love this outfit. I wore it on an antiquing trip and it fit right in with the fall weather and hidden treasures. Every piece was fairly inexpensive. I found most of them in Forever 21 or H&M. I scored that awesome green jacket at 50% off in Zara. The sleeve has an intricate embroidered pattern that I can’t get over.

Bold Prints and Animal Themed Fall Accessories

H&M has always been, and will always be, one of my favorite stores. It can be dangerous for me to go in there. The clothes are so on trend and priced perfectly for my college-student budget.

On my most recent trip into the world of H&M I picked up some awesome accessories for fall. I stuck with pieces that featured bold tribal patterns and animal prints. I’m thinking of pairing the snakeskin bag with a maroon jacket and some gold jewelry. That scarf is going to top off a whole number of single colored sweaters in my fall wardrobe.

I didn’t buy those awesome animal rings (I found them online later), but I think I’ll have to go back sometime soon.
